NOAHFINNCE has lived his formative years under the spotlight of social media and now the star harnesses his story in remarkable debut album GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET.
Over the past few years, the 24-year-old has earmarked himself as one of the industry’s most exciting voices, stepping onto some of the country’s most prestigious stages. Releases to date have crossed genres and seen the star establish a trademark lyricism that straddles witty with searing social commentaries.
CelebMix takes you through GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET track by track.
‘KINDA LOVE IT’
Where GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET is a record that excels in its swooshing choruses and guitar-heavy production, it whirrs into life with a slow snarl on ‘KINDA LOVE IT’. “I know you don’t like it, when I don’t quite, but I kinda love it,” the singer smirks. A moment later the ‘I’ turns into a rallying call of “we won’t quit” as he welcomes fans to his long-awaited full debut project.
‘GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET’
The album’s title track and highlight comes in ‘GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET’. The single is already a firm fan favourite and can be considered NOAHFINNCE’s most exceptional work. The frenzied track provides a supercut story into the journey that has led the artist to this point with a genre-bending mishmash of hyper production that adds to a palpitating pace.
‘3 DAY HEADACHE’
NOAHFINNCE serves up a piece of punk goodness on ‘3 DAY HEADACHE’. The star concludes he’s “waiting on breakdown” before rolling into a careless chorus of ‘la, da, das’. This is a Gen Z anthem.
‘I KNOW BETTER’
A clever follow-up to ‘3 DAY HEADACHE’, ‘I KNOW BETTER’ hinges on a brilliantly chunky riff as NOAHFINNCE heads towards a breakdown. The single marked a notable change of sound for the star when dropped last year as his trademark lyricism met a sonic evolution.
‘ALEXITHYMIA’
There’s little space to think in the chaos whipped up on ‘ALEXITHYMIA’, but that may well be the point. The song’s title refers to a term used to describe problems with feeling emotions and the singer finds a clever way of turning that frustration into a hit that hinges on his call of, “I wish I could blow my brains out.”
‘SUBTITLES’
A track built for a live show, ‘SUBTITLES’ packs an arena-sized punch. A song you want to scream as loud as you can, behind the huge chorus is a candid tale of the star’s mental health – something he’s always been open about online.
‘RISE AND GRIND’
NOAHFINNCE has had a stratospheric rise over recent years and the vertigo has him feeling sick – oh, and a nearby influencer begging for a verification mark. The star’s satire is at its sharpest on ‘RISE AND GRIND’ as he analyses the world of stardom he has found himself in.
‘ALL THE SAME NOT THE SAME’
GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET may be NOAHFINNCE’s debut album but the singer is not a new kid on the block. The star has been sharing his life online for around a decade and his followers have grown up with him. ‘ALL THE SAME NOT THE SAME’ sees NOAHFINNCE find solace in the community of his generation.
‘SCUMBAG’
There are no prisoners taken on ‘SCUMBAG’, another of the record’s most remarkable moments as NOAHFINNCE takes aim at at certain author. The star’s usual witty lyricism boils into furious on the track. “I am what I am and I won’t be ashamed,” he delivers as a rallying call on a brilliant bridge.
‘LOVELY LADIES’
McFly co-write ‘LOVELY LADIES’, a track which has already been debuted at NOAHFINNCE’s live shows. The flick is a searing mockery of bigotry prevalent online and in the media as the star mocks the idea of a ‘transdemic’ in one of the record’s wittiest moments.
‘GIBBERISH’
GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET comes to an end on what could be the album’s most pop-ready effort. Production is playful as NOAHFINNCE brings his story to an end and finds solace in not knowing quite what’s next. “Ask me how I am, well I haven’t decided yet,” the singer delivers in a final rallying call.
