With the club’s youth team, he won the 2016 edition of the Copa São Paulo de Júniores, the most important youth soccer tournament in Brazil. Lucas was promoted to the club’s senior professional team soon after the competition. In the final of the 2017 edition of the Copa do Brasil (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Brazil), he scored CR Flamengo‘s only goal in a 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. CR Flamengo, however, went on to lose the final by a 5-3 margin in the penalty shootout. In the 2nd leg of the final of the 2017 edition of the Copa Sudamericana (the 2nd-tier club competition in South American soccer, ranking below the Copa Libertadores), Lucas scored CR Flamengo‘s only goal in a 1-1 draw against Argentinian professional sports team Club Atlético Independiente. However, a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the final meant that CR Flamengo lost the overall rubber by a 3-2 margin on aggregate. For his performances in the 2018 edition of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (the top division of Brazil’s professional soccer league system), he was included in the ‘Team of the Year’.In 2018, Lucas also won the Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) in the category of midfielders. The award, since 1970, has been presented by the Brazilian monthly sports magazine Placar to the best players in their respective position (1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders, and 3 or 2 forwards) in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.With Brazil, he won the Copa América title in 2019 and finished as the runner-up in the 2021 edition of the tournament. The 2019 title was Brazil’s 9th such and, as of December 2022, Brazil was the 3rd-most successful team in the competition – behind Argentina and Uruguay (15 titles apiece). In the 2021 edition of the tournament, Lucas had scored the only goal in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Chile in the quarter-final as well as the only goal in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Peru in the semi-final. The Copa América is the premier men’s soccer tournament contested between national teams from South America. Played for the first time in 1916, it is the oldest continental soccer competition that is still active. For his performances in the 2020-21 season, representing Olympique Lyonnais, he was included in the ‘UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year’. UNFP (Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionels) is the main trade union for professional soccer players in France. Ligue 1 is the top division of the French soccer league system. For his performances in the 2021-22 season, Lucas was chosen as the best foreign player in Ligue 1. This was decided by voting in which more than 20,000 fans participated. When he signed up for West Ham United F.C. in August 2022, it was for a club-record transfer fee. Although the amount was not disclosed by the club, it was widely reported that the 5-year contract was greater than £50m and also included additional add-ons.In the pre-quarterfinal stage of the 2022 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, a 4-1 win against South Korea, he scored Brazil’s last goal. Croatia then defeated Brazil in the quarter-final which meant that this was the 4th time in the last 5 editions of the tournament that the 5-time champions had been knocked out in the quarter-final stage.Lucas is a massive fan of funk carioca, a hip-hop-influenced style from Rio de Janeiro that blends the funk music genre with rap subgenres like Miami bass and gangsta rap.
