Katherine Jenkins is not a new singer. She first gained popularity in 2003 for singing at Westminster Cathedral and the year later started to release her own albums. Even though she has been well-known for a while, her fans enjoy getting to know more about her. Many have been wondering about her diet, more specifically, whether or not she is vegan.
Katherine Jenkins is a pescetarian-vegetarian, not vegan. Katherine has been very public about being a vegetarian to honor her friend that passed away. She does also try to avoid dairy before singing, making people believe she is vegan. But, she has said that she still eats fish, so she identifies as a pescetarian-vegetarian.
Continue reading to find out more about Katherine’s pescetarian-vegetarian diet and why she follows it.
Vegetarian, Vegan, and Pescetarian
As time goes on and people become aware of different diets, being vegetarian or vegan becomes more common.
A vegetarian or vegetarianism is the practice of not eating meat, poultry, or seafood. This may include by-products of animal slaughter like gelatin which is made of skin, tendons, and ligaments from cows or pigs.
A vegan or veganism is the practice of not eating any meat, poultry, and seafood in addition to all animal products. This includes things like dairy and eggs. Vegans also tend to not use any products made from animals like leather or fur.
A pescetarian or pescetarianism is similar to vegetarianism in that pescetarians do not eat meat or poultry, but they do eat seafood.
Pescetarianism is usually seen as a stepping stone to vegetarianism or an ethical compromise. Katherine Jenkins identifies as a pescetarian-vegetarian as the only meat she eats is seafood.
Katherine Jenkins’ Diet
Katherine Jenkins posted on her Instagram in 2019 a picture of vegetables with this caption: “I’ve been veggie for more than 12 years now – since a dear friend of mine Polly chose to take control of her fight against cervical cancer and we gave up meat together in order to heal.”
She has explained in an interview with Piers Morgan that she is vegetarian only in support of her friend Polly Humphries and because meat “doesn’t agree with her”, not because of humanitarian reasons.
This may be why she is not fully a vegetarian. She has identified as a pescetarian-vegetarian in the past because she still eats seafood.
Further, she received backlash previously for performing at Harrod’s Department Store as they sell fur.
Vegetarians and vegans were upset at Katherine for taking the performance as another singer, Leona Lewis, previously turned it down due to their sale of fur.
Katherine responded by saying she was excited about the opportunity and further said, “Personally, I do not eat meat or wear fur, but people are entitled to their opinions.”
So, although she is vegetarian, it seems to be more for her diet and in support of her friend rather than some vegetarian’s motivation to save and protect animals.
Some of Katherine’s fans also thought she was vegan since she said she does not eat dairy and has said that her favorite food is vegan pizza.
She again only avoids dairy for dietary reasons, not humanitarian. She does not consume dairy as it affects the way she sings.
She says, “Milk will create a thick layer of phlegm that will make you sound disgusting.” So she just avoids it entirely.
Without dairy and meat, her normal diet is porridge with almond milk for breakfast. Salad with tuna or tofu for lunch and roasted vegetables with salmon for dinner. She says she also avoids alcohol as it has a negative effect on her voice.
So, Katherine does upkeep a partial vegan/vegetarian diet, but because she still eats seafood like the tuna and salmon she mentioned, she cannot be classified as a vegan.
