OBaseki was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, as the third child of Gbinigie of Owina Street and the late Pa Roland Obaseki.
He had his elementary education at St. Matthew’s Elementary School in Benin City and his secondary school at Eghosa Grammar School.
He succeeded Adams Oshiomole as governor of Edo State under the APC, although he later switched to the PDP.

Early Life
Before attending the University of Ibadan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics, he completed his elementary education at St. Matthews Anglican Elementary School in Benin City. He then attended Eghosa Anglican Grammar School in Benin City.
The primary task for Mr Godwin Obaseki’s National Youth Service Corps was completed in Jos, Plateau state.
The young Obaseki continued to Pace University in New York and the famous Ivy League Columbia University, where he earned an MBA in finance and international business, respectively.

Mr Obaseki has excelled in his chosen field over the past 30 years, rising to the status of a world-renowned authority in investment banking, asset management, and securities trading.
He has had jobs with several companies, including Capital Trust Brokers Limited in Lagos, International Merchant Bank (a division of First Chicago Bank), AVC Funds Limited in Lagos, and the New York-based Equitorial Finance Company, a financial consultancy organization with a focus on Africa.
It’s noteworthy that Mr Obaseki headed the core team that established two Nigerian “new generation” banks, fundamentally altering the nature of the nation’s banking industry.
In 1995, Mr Obaseki established Afrinvest West Africa Limited (formerly SecTrust), establishing himself as an entrepreneur.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) chose Afrinvest as the correspondent stockbroker for Nigeria in 1995, in part because of Mr Obaseki’s financial expertise and the company’s many accomplishments.
The Nigerian International Debt Fund (NIDF), which allowed Nigerians to invest local funds in US Dollar instruments, was formed by Mr Obaseki, who was regarded as a solutions provider with ideas at the time. This was done in 1996.

He is happily married to Her Excellency Mrs Betsy Obaseki, and they have three children together.
Obaseki is a trustee for the Dr Jackson Owen Obaseki Foundation, a family-run non-profit organization that provides free medical and educational aid to the most disadvantaged.
